Flip a Lesson

  • Title/Topic of Lesson: Acute Renal Failure
  • Description of learning objective, what do you want the students to understand after this lesson?
    • The students should be able to define acute renal failure, classify it and identify the differences between one type and another based on the Hystory and Physical exam and lab tests.
  • What is the pre-class content? This can be research, reading, watching a video or something else that prepares them for the activity in class. You need to stress to students that it is an active process: take notes from the video/reading, etc.
    • Read three papers on the subject
    • Watch several videos on YouTube on the subject
  • How will you encourage (close to) full participation of your students on the pre-class content? WSQ or a survey? A quick 1 minute video by them of their summary/questions?
    • Survey on Googleforms
  • What are you planning to do in the classroom to actively apply the learning or dig deeper into the topic?
    • Discussion in class about the topic, where the students can participate in making a summary of the topic that will be included in their portfolio
  • How are you going to evaluate the activity afterwards? As appropriate you could be testing learning of skills/knowledge and/or a survey of their reflection/opinion on this type of learning environment.
    • Survey in Googleforms
  • Your reflection on the process. This can be as short or long as you like and of course will not happen until after this course is over. Just record your experience for your benefit and for others perhaps.
    • I think students are engaged in this type of learning experience. They are motivated to watch videos and at the same time, are willing to share information with peers. This makes it easier for them to be involved in classwork and comment on the new things they have learned in the topic. Most of the students want to be heard by peers. They try to listen closely to what others have to say and at the same time, want to be able to share their own understandings.
    • I think they are getting involved in this kind of innovative techniques with higher expectations than in a regular class.
